DUSK is a retro-styled FPS that’s retro, but doesn’t get stuck attempting to mimic retro. It calls for teamwork and precision in order for you to survive, but that fills each encounter with a degree of tension that few other FPS video games reach. That tension is only heightened by the enemy selection crawling round each stage. Your rewards should even be primarily based on outcomes and not simply the activity stage of the worker. There’s, in fact, a metal soundtrack paired with a degree of spookiness designed to make you both benefit from the riff and jump out of your chair within five seconds of one another.

So much is in Half-Life 2, from an unprecedented stage of architectural design to facial animation which rendered the rest obsolete overnight, to a physics system which reworked shooter environments from scenery into interactive useful resource, to a few of gaming’s most striking baddies in the Striders and Reloaded an enormous step forwards in making AI companions believable and likeable. That this, plus the cliffhanger ending of Episode 2, left so much more to be told leaves Pc gaming in a perpetual state of frustration that the series has, publicly no less than, floor to a halt.
I don’t assume all of it is as striking because it as soon as was – significantly, much of the man-capturing feels routine and barely weightless now – however Half-Life 2 gave us more than another first-individual shooter before, and reloaded possibly even since.
